I have only the fondest memories of growing up in Laurelton. It was truly a "neighborhood" and we didn't need to make "play dates". Every summer the "Center" which was located inside PS 176 on the first floor housed all of us and every week day we played ping pong, pool, kickball, basketball, etc. Many great summers took place there during the day and then in the "cement" park after the Center closed at p.m. I took my two boys (12 and 14) there in the summer of 2005 to show them the three houses I lived in, the schools I went to, and to share my memories of growing up there. We didn't lock the doors on our homes during the 1950s. All the kids would play games in the street till the lights came on: I Declare War, Scully, Ringo Levio, Ghost. I attended PS 156 and JHS 59, and I graduated from AJHS in 1962. I went to PS 156, JHS 59 and Springfield Gardens HS grad 1969. One lives in Mount Kisco NY and the other lives in Philly PA. It had more of a Long Island "feel." I'm currently living in Princeton, NJ. Life revolved around school, the schoolyard, the LJC, little league and later hanging out on Merrick Road at such establishments as Carmine's Pizza. I loved my childhood and will never forget all my friends who lived there and who I grew up with. It's nice to see I'm not the only one with pangs of nostalgia about Laurelton. I have fond memories of Laurelton, riding bicycles, having hoola hoop contests, playing hop scotch. Some of the friends I remember were Stuart Fishman, Edith Edelstein, Anita Bernheimer, Elayne Gross, Susan Dankner, Donald French, Trudi Sturm (who I just reconnected with and who is refreshing my memory about lots of fun times)and lots of kids from Springfield Gardens, Rosedale and Cambria Heights as well. I seem to remember it all as Nirvana........could that possibly be true? We are fortunate to live near our two grandsons and get to spend a lot of time with them. I remember all the teachers being mentioned by others (Herb Magidson, director of The Man Who Came to Dinner, which I stage managed really inspired me to do the theater thing as I'm currently a local stage director and actor and have worked on almost 100 shows in the last 20 years).
